jimmyirish got a reaction from Rob I in Tattoos and the workplace
I think the kid going for a job as a bus boy is such an interesting example. When you have no skills you are basically at the mercy of everyone, in the context of menial work you are going to be judged for your tattoos; because frankly you haven't got much else going for you!
The way I see it the answer is not to spend your life doing shit work and not getting the tattoos you want, but as @Graeme says, embrace the margins. If you can develop a skill set that demands you be judged on the quality of your work rather than your tattoos, then you got the best of both worlds.
There's a guy who drinks at the bar I work in who I've become friends with, older guy in his mid 40's who has made a very successful career in fashion buying. He's got one the the best collections I've ever seen, two Thomas hooper sleeves as well as hands, bailey Robinson, Chad, Steve Byrne and many many others on his legs, Ian flower on the back of his neck...you get the idea. One of the other barmen asked him if he had ever worried about it effecting his job opportunities, in his thick Manchester accent he replied 'nah, I know who I am, and I'm fucking good at my job'

Wow that sounds like a great plan! Thank you so much for thinking about me :) Sounds like a good place! I've been living in a shared house with my four friends now almost three years in Stockholm.
Are your friends on lastsparrow? Otherwise they can find me on couchsurfing, or facebook: Joakim Mathiasson.
Thanks man, appriciate it!
(Just about to send the deposit to Kings Ave!)

jimmyirish reacted to joakim urma in Asking the artist to tattoo whatever they want
@heathenist I think "a trippy Jesus head" sounds pretty good as a request. Way better than "I want something to represent my family, my place in the world and how I developed as a person. Please also include a shark" -

This is the opinion I've always held: if you aren't a tattoo artist, then you shouldn't be designing tattoos for your friends. Especially if you don't know a thing about tattoos or tattooing to begin with.
While there is nothing wrong with your art, it isn't really well suited to be applied as a tattoo, and any decent tattooer will redraw it.
It blows my mind that people trust their non-tattooer friends to design tattoos for them (this shit happens sooooo often) but not the fucking people who have been tattooing for years and get paid to do that for a living.

Oh, yeah, and BHR rules. This fat line trend is bound to end soon enough anyways. Don't get me wrong I have some tattoos with pretty fat lines, and I'm sure they will hold up just fine. But I kinda think it's a little overboard sometimes, so much so that at a certain point you have to worry about how the fat line tattoos are going to age once the lines start to spread. BHR does really nice looking tattoos, I wouldn't worry at all about how they will age, in fact, I'd be surprised if his stuff doesn't age better than a lot of the overly fat lined tattoos.

Added a Kea and peony to my arm over the last few months. Have another session next month for background shading and hopefully it'll be complete. Artist Clare Hampshire.

@taaarro, I didn't hear back in the end from horitoshi 1, but I managed to book in with the equally brilliant Horimitsu. He is my favourite of horitoshi's protégés I think, so I couldn't be more excited!
In terms of time I think Horimitsu reckons we should be able to finish the tattoo in 2-3 sessions, because it is only the lower half of my forearm. I'm gonna be there from the 11th-18th November, I don't know where you are located in Tokyo but if you feel like getting a beer or something I would be super keen!

@jimmyirish You may very well already have resolved this, but I had the same worries, i.e. that he would balk at my idea, etc., but he was very friendly and there was no issue about doing a smaller piece. Japanese is also my first language so I don't know what it's like emailing with him in English. I think the big thing is that it takes muuuch longer than you might think so if you want to get it done in one trip you would have to get a very small piece.

jimmyirish reacted to Graeme in What do you think of this guy?
People get the tattoos they deserve. If you come here, and can watch an interview with Mike Wilson (among others!) and think this person is worth your business, maybe you deserve a shitty tattoo.

Looks like it's a girl, and looks like she doesn't have any tattoos, so I'd stay the fuck away and go find a real tattooer.

Pharaoh's Horses by Sheila Marcello @ Electric Tattoo in Asbury Park
they had a traditional flash weekend event @ the shop
as I was getting tattooed by Sheila I was a few feet away from Bert Krak and Robert Ryan doing pieces
there was many other big names there as well - place was packed
seeing Bert up close I couldnt believe how big the guy is - he looks like he could suit up for the NY Giants if he wanted
very cool vibe at this shop though I would say I prefer less of a crowd
pic is shiny - meh
