I had no idea Mina Aoki has only been tattooing for a couple of years. Jesus. I assumed from her tattoos she'd been at it a lot longer than that.

Pretty sure Hiroshi Hirakawa has only been tattooing for a couple of years .

I think Kim-Anh Nguyen (aka @bleakandblue) has only been tattooing for 2 years, which seems impossible. But in this interview from March 2012, she says she's only been tattooing 6-7 months.

I'm confused...
Anyways, some people want to pick an image off the wall for $150 an our while some want their life story poured into their tattoo for $500. Whatever floats your boat, right?
Some would think its crazy to sporadically pick an image off the wall and have it permenantly tattooed on their body with out prior planning while others would think its silly to get a personalized tattoo according to the vibe the artist picks up from the client.
Personally I want what I like and I'm willing to pay for it, end of story...

Supply and demand! It is fuckin Chris Conn and he will have no problem getting business, and considering there are mediocre tattooers charging $200 an hour it seems like a bargain to me, but heck I got 3 tattoos from him back when the hourly rate would get you one piece.
But lets face it getting tattooed by the likes of Deutsche, Sylvia, Lehi, Wilson etc they get twice or more done in an hour than most would do in 2 so it halves the hourly rate anyway, Chris is not fast but is he is super efficient!

The price is the price. His work is amazing so if you want it.... go and get it!!!! If it doesn't work in your budget or mind so-be-it.... There are many other fish in this sea.

I know the price seems a kinda steep, but I am sure he has his reasons. I bet it is more about keeping pieces relatively small. He has nothing to prove, and I doubt that he wants to be working on great big elaborate pieces. $500 an hour should keep that to a minimum. My understanding is that his health was not that great for the last little bit.

I've been pretty vocal about my love for Higgs, Dave Lum and Scott Harrison's work in the 1990s- that "American Weirdo" style that Hardy talked about in Tattoo Time V. It really influenced how I got tattooed more than just about any other 'school' of tattooing save esoteric/occult stuff. I think it's fair to say that Weirdo stuff led me to where I am now.
I just put a few teaser images up from the book on Occult Vibrations, and... it's just weird. So weird. Almost (blissfully) untattooably weird.
It's going to be like the Zeis book- first 200 (of 2000) copies gets a watercolor print.

Marina Inoue is the first who comes to mind, have digged her work for a while, guess it's a mix of colour pallet and her general style. Jessica Swaffer, Josh Stephens, Stuart Cripwell, Claudia De Sabe, Robert Ryan, Ichibay, Hiroshi Hirakawa (for his paintings as well of course) etc. etc.

Maybe I got the premise of the thread wrong but I think I know what you are talking about. A tattooer that is just nailing every single tattoo, at least in your opinion, particuliarly after seeing one of the examples of their work.
I'll throw this in, even though I guess I have a bit of bias toward them since I almost get exclusively tattooed by him. Regino Gonzalez at Invisible NYC really kicked it up for me when I saw one piece in particular.

I am really glad I not only get to hit the like button over and over on instagram but I get to continue getting new work from him every 2 weeks or so. There are a lot of amazing artists out there turning out amazing tattoos, but for whatever reason I really dig his take on anything from Japanese to B/G to traditional, and have at least 1 tattoo in 2 styles from him.
Second would probably be Grime, when he did @Iwar's leg. That was intense and really got me looking at his work differently.

I've gotta admit, I never noticed the lack of black women in flash/tattoos before. I feel kinda stupid now. Done by Dusty Neal (more info at THE STATIC AGE, I started thinking one day how I )
