  1. makes sense. artists definitely love free reign with a balance of direction. not sure how detailed Danny is, but it would be a bummer for any artist to draw up a color study only to hear that the client wants black and gray.

there is definitely a method to design line work so it can be turned into color OR black and gray, but I feel like designing for one or the other from the get go allows them to use different techniques or tricks. then again, if he didn't insist, you could probably trust he knows what he's doing... whether it's creating a flexible design or a color piece that's so good you can't say no.

some artists definitely prefer either color or black and gray, but I don't think that should play into your decision... you should wear what you want! think hard, make the right decision (hopefully sooner than later), and as you said... don't pester your artist. =)

can't wait to see how it turns out!

  2. Thank you for the welcome graybones - gone for Danny Rossiter at the Rain City Tattoo Collective in Manchester, UK. Have heard good things about him and really like the sharpness of his designs and the superclean lines he creates :) Not seen the design yet (got another 3 weeks to go till the actual appointment!) but am certain he will nail it (pardon the pun!) - I'm veering towards black and gray at the moment but will wait and see what he comes up with first :) can't wait!!! :)

welcome! I hadn't heard of Danny Rossiter before, but he definitely does some nice work. As far as black and gray vs color... I feel like that should be discussed before the artist starts their drawing, no? I feel like that could have an impact on certain design elements. I guess it's not absolutely critical.

  3. Got a this little wrist filler by Henry Wyatt at Inkies in Fremont, CA. Representing and supporting the Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda Relief... The design is a a guide taking the deceased to the Hereafter by canoe, based on an artifact known as the Manunggul Jar.

  4. there was a dude at the SFO convention who's collecting a squid pant leg of lady heads from different artists. i don't know if he has 'em elsewhere, but he had some nice work going, from what i saw. does anyone know if he's on here, without me sifting thru this whole 28 page thread? sorry for my laziness, but i'd love to see 'em!

  5. That's why I am toying with the back piece versus a couple of big pieces , not sure at all. A back piece is a bold statement though and I love them , but it's a big area that can be filled with a few sweet tattoos

one of the prominent tattoo sayings is "go big or go home." the back is the place to go the biggest! I would bet most artists would advise you to get a big back piece and I tend to trust the artist's opinions. I personally think the full back piece thread is one of the best on here!

but, as it's been stated before on this thread... your tattoos are your own and that's one of the main things that makes it great. do what makes you happy!!

  6. @hogg @tammy

lets make this happen even if its just meeting in the lobby

    @Lance @a1steaks @ian @cltattooing @CABS @cvportagee @Reyeslv @beez @9Years @petiloi @embers @MoistTowelette @SacramentoDan

    and anyone else going

i'll for sure be wandering around on Friday with a camera and brown canvas backpack. not sure if i'm gonna make it Saturday and Sunday, but it's highly likely. think it'd annoy the artist if a meet location was by someone with a set appointment? saw that @embers has an appointment with Bryan Burk on Friday... just a thought.

  7. I'll be fighting the urge to get a walk-up from about 20 different people...

don't fight it! take advantage of it!! ;)

Any tips? I know some people leave a day open for walk-ups.

get there as early as you can on Friday... browse the artists and portfolios. if you find someone you like, ask if they have any time available thru the weekend. If you bring down a cooler full of Dick's Deluxes, perhaps I can drop a few tips on a some great artists who are likely to have walk-ups.

  8. i think having the clients vote for the worst tattoo is a pretty rough idea. i understand they've chosen to get a free tattoo from some random ass artist who they don't get to pick and it's basically a crap shoot, but then to have all the other clients sit in a circle and talk shit about the tattoo you JUST got... still oozing... that's just gotta suck. "hey! our tattoos suck, but YOURS is definitely the worst."

at least, before, the unknowing clients could go home and enjoy their bad tattoos until they saw it on TV getting torn apart by the judges.

  9. a 7 hour layover sounds like a 4hr tattoo at Liberty with 3hrs to get from and back to the airport! that's enough time to get thru traffic and security, no prob!

  10. Hey, quick question. Is this an event that you can pre-order tickets to? The website says it's just 20 bucks a day, I know a lot of convention type events will raise the prices of tickets as the date draws nearer. It doesn't appear so, but I figured I'd ask some people who have already been.

I don't believe they have pre-order tix and they don't raise the price on the day of the convention. I can't remember if there's a cheaper price for weekend pass , tho.

  11. Oy, no Seattle screenings either!!

i wish i had seen this post sooner... there as a showing at pacific place last night.

Yup. Saw it. It was about what I expected. Well done adn would like to see more of this type of thing. Its to bad I saw very few non-tattooers at the show where I live.

i also thought it was really well done. not only did they go over a lot of the history of black and gray tattooing, but they conveyed a lot of emotion that goes along with this style. it was also pretty cool to see all that amazing work that big and close up! there were a few pieces that got a bunch of oohs and ahhs from the audience and from the reaction to all of Ed Hardy's pieces, i could tell there were at least a few folks in the theater that were non-tattooers or even non-collectors... i loved the feeling of having a lot of folks getting knowledge dropped on 'em.

  12. i just started looking at knives and the range of stuff that's out there is nuts. better late than never, i guess! i'm keeping it fairly low budget (for now), currently carrying a SOG Trident Mini and a Kershaw Cryo is in the mail. i tend to have an addictive/collecting personality, so knowing that, my wife said, "you should just get ONE!" i'm already up to two (shhhhhhh!) and interweb surfing for more.

does anyone check out the EDC website that Jeff Crib mentioned in his LST interview? there's definitely some good stuff on there and it's influenced me to start carrying a flashlight too (fenix E05). again with the better late than never, i'm finally putting together a go bag. one of the first things i put in was dryer lint, per Jeff Crib's fire starting demonstration. after reading this thread, i'm strongly considering the addition of a ka-bar.

    this forum's full of enablers!
