Hands On got a reaction from DavidG in Do sleeve tattoos need to be planned out?
    welcome to LST!
i think it depends on what the subject matter is and how big the rest of the objects in the tattoo are going to be. If it's a buncha small things, then adding more small things to the last 1/4 is fine. If you're getting a huge dragon or tiger that takes up 3/4, adding something small in the last 1/4 might look like an afterthought. going for the full sleeve right off the bat allows the artist to plan and gain balance. then again, if you already know what you might get in that last 1/4, you might let the artist know your potential thoughts so that they can plan ahead in their minds to make it work well later.
care to share what you're thinking about getting and what artist will be doing the work? this thread currently has too many words and not enough pictures for my simple IG fed mind. 😃

I agree, but if you know ahead of time that you want a full sleeve, I don't see any reason not to plan for it.

I'd just go ahead and get the full sleeve, but there is no reason you can't go ahead with the 3/4 sleeve and just design it so it can be turned into a full sleeve later.

there are no rules, just do what ever YOU want , it's up to you if you want a sleeve of all the same style or like me, just get what moves you that month.
I have full leg & arm sleeves and I am a mess of many different styles and genres , and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks for the reassurance pal, just didn’t know what to expect from this tattoo as my first was just a small one which healed very quickly

i have a few large, multi-session tattoos and plenty of one shot tattoos, so i know and love the feelings of each. i've also thought about this in the past after starting and completing the multi-session pieces.
one shot tattoos get you that instant gratification. they can be sign posts thru life or little things to remember. they work better for collectors who want to get tattooed by many different tattooers and have different experiences or vibes. they can fill the itch quickly, with little to no thought.
large, multi-sessions tattoos are a whole other experience.  It takes planning, commitment and dedication which increases the level of gratification.  Each step along the way gets you closer to the finished product and furthers the anticipation. Schedule a consult. Consult. First session line work. Shading. Color. Details. The final wipe down. BEING DONE. There are times when you dread going in for that one part that's gonna hurt like a motherfucker. There's the joy when you see that part done and you know that a tattoo needle never has to touch that part again, for the rest of this lifetime. You build up a relationship and familiarity with your artist.
You can still get some of those same feelings with smaller tattoos. You can get a body suit of one shot pieces by the same artist. You can plan how all those pieces are gonna fit together and get the gratification of getting each spot done.
here are a couple examples by Paul Dobleman and you gotta love both! It's really just the aesthetic and experience that each individual is seeking, and that journey is as different as can be. (by the way, @Nadams1024, the mermaids are facing outwards and it's still right).

i guess this is just a long-winded way of saying that it's all good, to each his own, just keep getting tattooed!!

Got this guy from Scott Harrison last Sunday. Aside from the dope tattoo, I also got some great stories. If you're anywhere near the PNW, you should make your way to Portland and get work from this legend before he re-retires!

I haven’t got any back pieces done but I have my shoulder. Why not try wearing a bikini top? Then that way there’s only two strings to contend with and they can be untied when he gets to the center. Your front would still be covered (you’d be lying on your stomach most likely, or maybe sitting in a chair leaning on the back?). Your sleeve is amazing, I love it.

Thanks for the love and tips everyone! I'm definitely anxious for the pain aspect but I'm sure I can do it 😳 I'll be most excited when it's finished. I'm not one who enjoys the process!

Yes, the back is rough, but you power through it because you're tough and powerful. also, don't be afraid of breaks and communicating with your artist. I get completely naked, but I'm a dude so it's different.
There's a thread here called "full back piece experience." Check it out for further ideas.

Hi Friends! I'm new here. In November I'll be starting a full back piece. My artist is Travis Hulshizer at The Green Gazelle in Kansas City. We wrapped up my sleeve a couple years ago and finally am ready to start my next project. It'll be a full back piece centered around a turkey vulture with feminine imagery to balance it. I'm also a VERY anxious person and am already nervous about the pain. I was able to sit for 5-6 hour sessions for my sleeve but I hear the back is pretty rough. Also, for ladies, and tips on the best way to dress for comfort and easy access to my full back? Thanks!

    Hey guys.
In like 2016 a film student made a video of an old session of mine getting waves and leaves added to my turtle by Takashi Matsuba in his old studio. Thought I'd post some stills from the video here. The video's locked, but it's cool.
