    Upcoming Tattoos

Can't wait for Friday. I know I said it before, but Scott Sylvia at Pagoda City. If I have time, I may also snag something from my local regular artist, Keith Reed, who will also be there.

    Upcoming Tattoos

You pulled out a comment that I made two years ago which had no barring on any current discussion and called it "laughable". If that isn't looking for an argument then I don't know what is. I hate clogging the feed with this sort of shit, and I apologize to everyone for doing it. I have my reasons for picking the other shops over Smith Street, but I did not say anything to discredit anyone at Smith Street or anywhere else for that matter. And I didn't say that being here from the beginning made my opinions more valid than anyone else's. What I was saying is that in five years, and nearly 700 posts on this forum I have never been in one argument until now. On your twelfth post you started one. I accept your apology, and if I am wrong about this whole thing then I also apologize. Now how about we let this thread get back to what it is really about. If you have anything you would like to further discuss send me a private message.

  3. I redrew some daggers from a sheet of 1920s flash by an unknown artist that is in Flash From The Past. I had a lot of fun with this. And here are a couple of other things I've done that I don't think I've put up here. The hannya is from a couple of months ago, the roses I did sometime last year.

    Upcoming Tattoos

In two days I go to Sarah Hurst @ Vivid Tattoo Knoxville to begin work on extending the cameo of my wife on my shoulder into a half (or a bit more) sleeve. Excited, but more nervous than ever before. It will just be a start, because I have to work and had to set the appointment to start at 5pm.

  9. Twelve posts in and you are trying to start a fight with someone that has been on this forum since the beginning. I suggest that you start to really educate yourself on tattoos and tattooing before you go around using cliches that you don't really understand. That is all I will say to you on this subject. Good Luck my friend. You are off to a wonderful start.

I guess you're one of those guys that thinks that every traditional tattoo needs lines as thick as your femur. Come back in a year or two and let me know what trend you are into then.

    Showing Off

I forgot to mention that when I go to the annual tattoo convention in my area, I definitely dress to show off. I usually wear a racerback top so it will show my sleeves and shoulder ink. If I get my back piece, I'll probably opt for a backless dress, or maybe a modified tank that is backless. Not sure if I can find something like this or if I will have to make something. Any suggestions, ladies? Anybody else dress to the nines for conventions? Conventions are a place where I violate my "always cover" rule. I love feeling part of the tribe. I do worry that I might see someone I knew. Now of course this is patently absurd because if I am so concerned about untattooed people that I know seeing and judging me, why in hell would they be at a tattoo convention? Sheesh...I am so friggin' neurotic! But I did run into a tattooed woman there who works at the coffee shop that I frequent, which was funny because for a few seconds we looked at each other with strange looks trying to figure out why we recognized each other, and I had a moment of panic thinking that she might be a professional contact. Then it dawned on us both at almost the same moment how we knew each other. She said "Ooooh cool sleeves! I've never seen your tattoos before!" I said yeah, I usually cover up. The next time I was at the coffee shop, all neatly covered up and professionally dressed, she gave me a little smile and knowing wink, which was fun - I kind of like knowing that she knows my secret. - - - Updated - - - Well this thread is fun. In addition to discussing whether we dress to show off, it went places I didn't expect, making me confront my reluctance to show my tattoos. Some of you really made me really think hard about this - thanks! I'm going on vacation out-of-state next week, where I will pretty much constantly show my tattoos, as is usual when on vacation. But this time I'm going to try to try to imagine that I'm at home with my tattoos showing. When I come back, I think I'm going to test the waters and go out in my hometown with my tattoos showing. This will be a big step for me! I'll keep you posted!

  13. Prettyyyyyyyyy pumped about this one, not gonna lie. Yesterday: There's a vid too: https://instagram.com/p/5075TDTBNR/?taken-by=greggletron By Greg Whitehead at Scapegoat in Portland, as usual. My thigh feels like a wobbly hot water bottle today, and I don't even care. :o

    Old tattoo photos

These four are on my great-uncle Boots, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy. First two are on his upper arms and were done in 1949 in a street booth "by some 19 year-old kid in Pompey, England". Google tells me that means Southampton. The second two larger ones are on his forearms and were done in Victoria, BC. Artist unknown. Within the same year, I believe. All of his kids' names are in/around the tattoos.

    Old tattoo photos

My family reunion was this past week. I made sure to get some shots of the tattoos on my great uncles. These would be some of the first tattoos I remember seeing as a child. These are on my Uncle Jerry. Done in Vancouver, BC in 1941 by Steve Robertson*. My uncle was 15 years old, and was working on the Building and Rail gang of the CN Railway. One night they got into a bottle of wine, the older guys told him he was going to get tattoos, and he went along with it. They cost $1.25 each. * My uncle says these were done in a shop by an artist of that name. Has anyone heard of him? There is a Canadian tattoo history thread I have yet to read through fully, I will check there too. First is a heart with an arrow+banner, "Father" and "Mother" above and below. Second is an anchor, kind of tough to read nowadays as it's quite small.

  17. I try to ignore them, personally. Unless intentionally and obviously a racial/ethnic/religious/national/whatever slur, there are too many people inventing and imagining slights just to draw attention to themselves and gain control over others. There are too many real problems with society to worry about reading something into someone's ink.

    Apprentice Drawings

I would say that technique aside I'd be really bummed if any of those were on me, but the truth is if you showed me your drawings I'd refuse to be tattooed by you so it's a moot point. @CultExciter offered you excellent advice above. Those people would be a lot better off with some simple Sailor Jerry flash because at least it would be drawn correctly. Trace classic flash. Take up drawing from life to understand how things work and go together. Always use reference. Traditional style should be about taking objects and distilling them down to their essence: look at Scott Sylvia's roses. They're simple but they fully capture the elegance and beauty of a rose. Work hard to draw like that.

  19. I went camping here (Alberta Rocky Mountains) with 10 of my kung fu bros: I took 2 hits of LSD and dove off a 75' cliff into glacier water. It was awesome!

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Thanks @suburbanxcore, @ItsNewport, @polliwog, and @CABS. I had a lot of fun doing that, even though it was kinda weird to just blast two dozen photos of myself all day. It was really nice to revisit all the times I got tattooed and the stories and experiences that went with each piece. And the kind comments from people like you all (and others who I don't even know through LST) really had an impact on me. @Iwar has started something great, and I already have several ideas for people I want him to feature in future takeovers. :) - - - Updated - - - You saw my bedroom tribal post, right? ;) And I didn't show all my tattoos in the takeover, so you can just assume the ones I didn't show are terrible.
