I know many of you are film lovers but there doesn't seem to be a thread about tattoos in films....I decided to start with my favourite from 'Eastern Promises'
(this picture doesn't include stars on each knee that he had in the film, as far as I remember)
I don't think people realize that most tattoos you see in the cinema are the work of theatrical make-up artists....I think they've made a good job on Viggo and those tattoos are also very important to the film plot as we realize that we are dealing with real Russian mafia, not some plain criminal...and that there is some tragic history behind each of those marks....
Anyone has a favourite tattoo from a film?
Or maybe an opinion on how tattoos are represented by the movie industry? And why is there so much TRIBAL?? In the era of HD TV and digital cameras the excuse that some tattoos don't film well and it's best to use bold black designs is no longer enough to justify all those designs!

I just thought I will share my humble experience. I've been offered an apprenticeship a long, long time ago. The artists were impressed with my drawings/art. But they didn't go through with it as another person came to the shop the next day. This guy tattooed all his army mates. He was doing it with a self-made machine. No artistic bone in his body, honest! But the shop owner felt that the guy will be better suited for an apprenticeship (although other artists who worked there felt otherwise). It crushed my spirit for a while. Now I plan to pay for a tuition before I seek apprenticeship again. I want to make tats on pig skin, synthetic skin and finally, after I feel I am ready to do it safely, I will tattoo myself. But I would never consider tattooing other people without serving full apprenticeship!

In the words of one clear-sighted enthusiast, 'The guy with 10,000$ worth of tattoos is no different then the guy in an Italian designer suit wearing a Rolex.'

    1. For each exclusive commodity there is a niche for illegal copies
    2. for every standardised and regulated industry there are people committed to operate outside of this industry, often in opposition to it.( think street art- most of it is a nuisance and it IS illegal, mostly quite bad too. But there's no stopping them, it's about personal freedom)
    3. Goods that are common cannot be exclusive but having no cash for Nike's trainers never stopped anybody from running. They'll buy Chineese exports.
And I could go on and on with reasons WHY. The bottom line is the answer is as simple and as complicated as the modern capitalist society.

'course they are!! But not all tatoos are 'tramp stamps' and having a tattoo doesn't mean you're easy and into kinky sex with strangers. What annoys me most is old pervs who think they have the right to talk trash to me 'because I like it'- an assumption made purely on the fact that I have a tattoo on the back of my neck....makes me sick!

Figured out it wasnt for me at around 12-13.
    Haven't looked back since!
The major problem I have with things like the OP, is the way people pick and choose shit out of religious texts. I say either stick to your shit and follow everything through and through or take it all as a guideline of types with some cool stories.
Great example I find quoted to me from time to time (and relevant to this forum).
This has been spoken to me before, then they go on to say I'm going to hell for my tattoos..blah blah. I usually wait for them to finish and follow up with....do you also know what is included in Leviticus 19?
"Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it." - oops got an rare steak
"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." - oops hair cut
"When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them" - Shit, a shitton of people screwed this one
"Do not go about spreading slander among your people." - most people have done this as well
There are more examples, but I do not feel like getting into them. I find it funny that the people usually spewing out bible verses usually only remember a handful of them that fit their particular opinion, but seem to "forget" all the others, or "those dont matter anymore, etc etc"

Aside from showing respect to this forum, you have no respect for your craft, no respect for your mentor. and no repect for yourself. get over the internet, it's not how you learn the trade or solve problems. i dont buy that excuse that you cant get tattooed at another shop go to the next county over. your fucking people up and aew not even making a real attempt to solve your problem. google is not for tattooers.
but i supose i am beating a dead horse. and what do i know i am just an apprentice who slaves 80 hours a week in trade for proper training in the craft. so fuck what i say. but you should be working harder.

Dr. Laura Schlesinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative.........
    Dear Dr. Laura
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.
    1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual cleanliness - Lev.15:19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
    4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
    5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
    6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
    7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?
    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town
together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted disciple and adoring fan,
    Jack

Anisya got a reaction from Dan S in Pornography... In and around a tattoo shop, what's your take on this?
I'll risk asking some (maybe stupid) questions to what has been said by @Ursula and many others:
    1. Why would you want to be associated with porn when it is associated with 'sleazy' 'sad' 'can't find a real girl' and such? And I'm not saying using porn (we all use it, have seen/read through it) but displaying it for all in public is a bit rude and bad manners (can I say 'bad manners' and porn in the same post?). It just paints this image of a lonely creep no one wants to f*%#. Doesn't it?
    2. Isn't 'Porn' when people 'do it'? As opposed to pictures that show naked girls in 'pseudo-erotic' poses?
    3. I don't think women get that offended by it but would you get tattooed (being a woman) by a guy who clearly likes this kind of stuff? I'd feel wrong with his hands on me, no matter the glowes. (and yet again, I can know he likes it and that is fine but when he's so 'in your face' with it...? Doesn't feel right.
And those are more questions then opinions....I don't really have an 'opinion' on the subject as it would depend on many variables....I'm curious, I guess...

I think there are some Hustlers or Penthouse in our reference library behind the counter (not sure who's they are? maybe collecters items?), but we don't have any magazines out for people to look at or any bought flash, everything on the walls was painted inside the four walls of the shop. Of course we have a bunch of tattoo books in the back along with tattoo artist magazines and if someone brings a gun or tattoo magazine in we might all look at it, and yes I would agree many tattoo magazines might as well be porn, but they take it with them when they leave or it gets recycled.
