  1. I agree with the above advice to talk to your artist first.

If s/he doesn't have a preference though, I would say it would depend mostly on how soon you plan to complete the tattoo. Like if you're outlining one day and then colouring two weeks later, that would be fine. If you're waiting a year to finish it (due to finances or whatever), then I would say go with a complete element so you don't have an unfinished tattoo for so long.

Really though a lot depends on composition, etc. so your artist will give you the best guidance to base your decision on.

  2. So my dad is actually a type 1.5 diabetic, but this thread fits anyway.

I posted the other day that I was going to take him to get a 60th birthday tattoo, his first. I think he was pretty excited to get it. Unfortunately on Sunday night he went on the internet and looked into getting tattooed as a diabetic. Most things he found said it was ok, as long as blood sugar was under control. Unfortunately there were warnings about getting tattooed, such as a diabetic has a higher chance of infection and potentially amputation as a result. Which is no doubt true, but even so the risk is extremely small.

So anyway, he bailed on the tattoo for now. Which I'm ok with, it's his arm after all. He wants to get his A1c number below 7, which apparently is a good indicator that your sugars are ok (currently he's at about 8-something). Still disappointing though, I was probably more excited than he was to go.

If there are other insulin-dependent diabetics on here who have been tattooed (and not had anything amputated as a result), please share your story!

  3. Upcoming tattoo - but not for me. My dad's 60th birthday is this weekend, and so next week I'll be taking him to get his first tattoo. It's something he's talked about wanting since I first started getting tattooed a few years ago, but I don't think he'd ever just go do it on his own. I asked him if it would be something he'd like to do with me and he's pretty excited I think. (I'm glad because if he didn't want one I have no idea what I'd get him!)

We're headed to The Pearl Harbor Gift Shop next week sometime, probably Monday so he can get a walk-in from Tim Pausinger (my recommendation, but I told him he could pick whoever he wanted).

50 years ago my great-grandfather founded a ship repair company in my hometown, and my dad has worked there for 40 years. The logo used to be a simple traditional anchor and rope so I think that's what he'll end up getting.

  4. I hope this is okay to post here but here is a pic of my first tattoo that I got yesterday! I am beyond happy about it and thought that the process of getting it was not bad at all. Here is a link to the guy who tattooed me because I feel he needs to be recognized for his work! https://nicholasrobertmoore.wordpress.com/ Let me know what you guys think of my tattoo everyone.

Nice tattoo! Already completed tattoos should go in to Latest Tattoo Lowdown - yours isn't really "Upcoming" anymore ;)

  5. Sorry, but the only thing you prove by paying way too much is your gullibility. There is lots of other art to fall in love with.

Haha! Well, I don't think I paid too much at all. I am quite certain none of you guys would think so either.

My friends who think I pay absurd prices are either have no tattoos or actually choose their tattooer based on the low hourly rate she has because she has a studio in her basement. True story.

And for the most part I don't even tell them the real price. I just give a vague round-number answer. Because they won't get it anyway. Value is subjective!

Further reading, because I'm an Austrian economics nerd in addition to being a tattoo nerd:

The subjective theory of value is a theory of value which advances the idea that the value of a good is not determined by any inherent property of the good, nor by the amount of labor required to produce the good, but instead value is determined by the importance an acting individual places on a good for the achievement of their desired ends. This theory is one of the core concepts of the Austrian School of Economics. While the modern version of this theory was created independently and nearly simultaneously by William Stanley Jevons, Léon Walras, and Carl Menger in the late 19th century it had in fact been advanced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance but did not gain widespread acceptance at that time. (from wikipedia)

  6. The flash is original to the artist so I wouldn't go to another person to get it done cheaper because that to me is just wrong. I just feel a bit stuck because it just isn't a 4 hour tattoo and the price tag he wants is a bit absurd

Almost all of my friends think that I paid an absurd amount for all of my tattoos. The price is the price.

Maybe the artist considers the piece special for some reason and s/he wants to limit how many people get it? Raising the price would ensure only the piece only goes to the most dedicated of collectors. Here's your chance to prove yourself.

    ;)

  7. I know that if I were to tell a used car salesman that I had a budget of £1000 then all of a sudden, every car on the lot would be at least £1100 and he'd "do me a deal" which really means he'd just do me. If I were asked for my budget, I'd probably go elsewhere.

I was asked to give a budget for my recent chest tattoo (my most expensive to date), and it didn't bother me at all. The way I figure it, if I trust this person to permanently mark my body, I should choose someone I trust enough to be fair with pricing.

  8. Welcome to LST!

You could do any of those things you suggest (rework, cover up, leave it). It just depends on how much it bothers you. I do agree that grey ink was a poor choice made by somebody.

My suggestion would be to not worry too much about this one and get an all new, awesome tattoo somewhere else on you (not by this artist!).

  9. Just hoping someone with an artistic mind will read this and help me decide on an appealing design or at least point me in the right direction.

I generally only suggest panthers or flames, which will probably not be of use to you in this situation.

I would like to make the suggestion, though, that your tattoo artist probably would be the best person to get advice from on this. :)
