Hi 47 year male from central Texas here. Finally getting half a sleeve koi fish in traditional Japanese style this Thursday. I'm very excited, but nervous. I did a lot of research on what artist I wanted to use and decided on Katja Ramirez, who works out of Rock Of Ages in Austin, TX. Really like the work I have seen from her. Just hope I don't embarrass myself and can take the pain. I do have a small tattoo, that is going to be covered up. Been reading a lot of posts and it has been very helpful. Just a short introduction and thanks for the helpful posts.

  5. So many awesome tattoos here lately, wish my tapatalk likes would show up! I got double teamed on my feet today, Jason Walstrom did the pig while Mimi Wunsch did the rooster. Pics stolen from their IG's. Wasnt as bad as I'd thought it might be beforehand, but definately stung more in a few places than most other spots so far, a bit worse than collarbone, nowhere near as bad the rib cliff. It's gonna be a fun few healing days coming up I'm sure!

Well, it's complicated because since it's her first tattoo, she thinks she has an obligation to make it mean something. All said and done, though, I know she will be happy as long as it's pretty, which is a guarantee. Because of my obvious Japanese art preference, she has come to feel the same way. So hers will be something along those lines. I would guess that either botan, chrysanthemum, or maneki neko are her top 3. I want to convince her to get a little maneki-neko popping out of a botan, but we'll see. Now if she backs out and it's up to me to fill the slot, I want a heikegani. I bet Wendy would kill it. Assuming I wasn't too slow and we get a spot :( What are you thinking about getting @ironchef?

  10. You'll be sweet as Dove. Two separate parts of the body, both relatively small jobs. The 1st tattoo will be a fading memory by the time you sit for number 2. Enjoy! When ya get the right head space happening, you'd be surprised how ya can slam 2 big sessions a week. Takes a lot of mental prep but. I'm glad those big monster sessions are done with :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

@Cork I like Wendy's florals but LOVE her whimsical little creatures. Have to think a little about it and also placement since I'm slowly running out of real estate. I've been looking over her Instagram and Tumblr for ideas. Right now just hope I get an email back about a spot. Great idea on the heikegani. I thought the lobster she did with little Murphy the hamster riding it was AMAZING. Very Miyazaki like.

All those folk at Saved are great, but if you want a Thomas Hooper tattoo, it's well worth your while to save your money and fly to Texas to get it from him. Nobody tattoos like him.

  13. This is damn beautiful @TrixieFaux, all the individual tattoos look great and form such a stunning, coherent whole. I bet this looks even better alongside your other arm, congratulations on keeping it so classy!

Wendy Pham finally coming to USA. @ironchef I emailed her for as pot in New York. My wife always said that if Wendy came stateside then Wendy would get the honor of giving her her first tattoo. And if my wife chickens out, I'll take the time slot :) "Hello Americans! Matthew_gordon and I are heading your way and working with these lovely folks! Email [email protected] , [email protected], with subject: USA! I will respond in the next few weeks :)"

    Tattoos and the workplace

Something postitive from my side... I work at the national air traffic control center in Switzerland, as an Aeronautical Information Management Controller. Sounds pretty uptight, right? I had some doubts if tattooing my arms would be a no-no. However when I learned that they hired a girl with neck tattoos, I went for it. Here's the exchange from a superior several management layers above me: Her: New tattoo? Me: Yes Her: Ooooooh show me! Me *shows outlines of Oldschool Pirate Girl and Ship Halfsleeve* Her: Wow thats beautiful! But you get it colored in, right? Me: Sure I do Her: Cool you have to show me immediately then End of story. Also, several coworkers who have expressed prejudice against tattooed people actually admire mine. Work relationship has not changed in the slightest, but instead even improved. A lot of coworkers now come to me for recommendations. Nice talks ensue.

    Dumb Hipster Tattoos

I think hipster fits kinda well for that trend. To me hipster tattoos lack a genuine commitment and honesty. It's easier to be ironic and mock something than to put yourself out there with a belief that goes deep for you. I don't mean a tattoo that has personal meeting , but for me it would be like getting some horror tattoo and deflecting with how funny it is rather then how much I love horror.

That awful tribal is going To be worked in To a halo kind Thing. But like i Said I was 17 when I thought that was cool. ( was an idiot) Also that Japanese part I though it said irezumi (tattoo in Japanese) but apparently it means sashimi (kinda sushi). Horiyoshi had a great laugh about that. 27. I stopped listening to this kind of music when His Hero is Gone broke up because I figured that with them gone nobody new would do anything worthwhile like that again. Bizarre logic maybe, but I stand by it. Other favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjtkQAbVdmY I would probably still get the MITB skull as a tattoo.

  35. You're willing to drive close to 15 hrs? ... How about as long as 16.5 hours? (Houston to Tempe AZ.... ) It's well worth it. Home to someone doing hands down the most amazing Japanese tattoos in the US. Anybody that knows, knows. Anyone that knows would agree without thinking twice.

  46. I figured I'd post a couple of in progress pics of my arm/chest. Martin Lacasse at Olde City. All the linework in about 3.5 hours. Sorry for the lousy phone pics. It's based on the Yoshitoshi print attached. The lower samurai is pretty closely referenced, but the severed head on his waist in the print is on the chest panel and he went nuts with the ghost/shadow samurai on the top half of my arm. One session of shading done so far, another in 3 weeks. -Update- Little better photo of the top w/ shading.
