Pornography... In and around a tattoo shop, what's your take on this?

Recommended Posts

I was in a shop one time and there was a guy in the tattooing area looking at a Playboy magazine. I had to do a double-take to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. Once confirmed, I thought "Cool".

Most shops I've been in though are more boutique-like, like a hair salon I guess, or an art gallery. I understand people like to uphold 'tradition', 'edginess', and 'mystique', but if I owned a shop I'd make sure to appeal to as many people as possible. I don't think having pornography lying around would do that. And trust me, I like women as much as the next guy. More even. ;-)

I don't like the look of having magazines in the lobby of any kind and certainly no television. Sure we all like naked ladies and that is why we paint sheets of them and hang them on the wall. I want people to come in and get tattooed not look at the latest issue of some shitty magazine or to watch cable. I would agree with the attitude of doing whatever you want in your shop, after all it is a tattoo shop. Just because some soccer mom comes in with her kid to get some tattoo doesn't' mean i won't drop f bombs or change the subject of my conversation. There is beer in the fridge and the music is always loud deal with it.

I wouldn't hardly call Playboy porn, but that's just me. Something like Hustler, yeah, that I'd say keep in the back room.

In light of another thread running on here, I think I'd leave a shop even faster if there was a bible laying out in the waiting area.

There is a well known and respected shop (on this board) where I was the other day that had Playboys laying around. What of it.

I'm more interested in the art & artists that a shop has to offer. If they need to distract people so badly from their bad art that they leave porn lying around, it's probably not worth being there. Sorry, fuckhead, but if they are that awesome, they don't need to supplement their bad-assery with poor "art."

As a woman, porn in a public area is pretty off-putting; if I wanted to hang out in a bachelor pad I'd go down to the frat house. I want to work with a professional artist, not some sleazeball who'll jack off in the bathroom after my session.

I can tell by your language that you are a lady of class and breeding and easily offended.

They're not mutually exclusive.

i'd kind of agree with the first portion of this. i wouldn't be offend if a place had some porn mags lying around, nor would i really care.

What if you're using it for reference material?

Do you also have National Geographic laying around? How many tattoos have animals or nature as the subject matter vs porn?

I can tell by your language that you are a lady of class and breeding and easily offended.

I don't want to be the person that puts a crimp in everybody's style. And porn itself is not something I'm going to judge; it's just that there's a time and place for everything. Professional people don't try to offend 50% of the population as soon as they walk in the door. This is a forum about tattoos, for chrissake. You should know a thing or to about people judging based on outward appearances.

I'm pretty sure you're judging people and insulting them in the one or 2 posts out of 3 you made since joining this forum.. but maybe calling someone a fuckhead and calling someone a sleazeball because there's a playboy mag in the same shop that 10 other people work in isn't considered judging other people.

Its not really your business what someone does after your appointment , however most of the ladies I know would be slightly stoked by that , then again I'm old and live in England .

I don't think you'll put a crimp in anyone's style here. You are assuming that 50% of the people who walk into a tattoo shop are offended by porno. For me it depends; are you talking about playboy or graphic hardcore porno. Playboy I don't care one way or the other and I don't think 50% of the people who are getting a tattoo care either; hardcore porn, I agree and I wouldn't go to a shop that had that laying all over the place.

As far as being judged by appearance, as a man with long hair, tattoos and motorcycles, I think I may have encountered some judgmental people in my day.

Heh, sorry Irezumi; didn't catch the sarcasm in the first post the last time around. I was responding to a post written by "fuckhead," that's why I called him that. I don't want to judge or insult anyone; I'm just making a point about impressions made on outsiders.

If tattoo artists want to be considered professionals, they need to act like it. Porn in the lobby is not professional.

I keep seeing repeated references to how much the view of tattoos are changing in the public eye; more people are getting tattoos, and they're being viewed with less and less negativity. What that means is that there's a huge untapped customer base of people out there who want a really great tattoo, and who don't have the "bad ass bitch" persona to go with it. Classy ladies can get tattoos too.

If you're a tattoo artist this might be something to pay attention to.

honestly, is it that bad if there are some porn magazines lying around? it's not like you have to open them up and read them. i've never been to a shop where they've had them, but i wouldn't really care and nor would i look at them.
