  2. I've been on a long road trip across America, and on the way, I've gotten my first couple tattoos. The compass rose is from Cassady Bell at Sideshow Odditorium in Portland, OR, the banjo is Ryan McDonald in Nashville TN. My friends definitely give me some shit for having a banjo on my arm, but I love it. Banjos are rad.

  3. Please don't take this wrong.....I am not meaning to sound like a bitch...but tattoos do not make people have anything in common with each other any more than you both having brown eyes! I think the longer you have been a tattooed person, the longer you have had to deal with people just walking up to you wanting to discuss your tattoos and even walking up and touching your tattoos! I am very willing to accommodate most people who want to do that as long as they respect my boundaries........ I mean it's cool to think of us all as one big family BUT 15 years ago it honestly was much more a family than it ever will be again because so many people are tattooed now! Also....a visibly tattooed person is a person (in my opinion) that can no longer hide the fact that they are tattooed by pulling down the sleeves on their long sleeved shirt! Hands/knuckles....necks....face! Everything else can be covered with clothing so heavily tattooed....yes.......visibly tattooed......not in my opinion until you can no longer hide them! I think it's great people are getting more tattoos and I guess it's cool that they seem to be more acceptable now.....but I rarely walk up to someone and talk to them just because they are tattooed....

  4. What kind of style are you thinking of? Because when I think of tattoos in magazines I think of super realistic portraits of Jim Carrey as The Mask, and I hope that's not what you came here asking for.

Hmm, well I've been going at a steady clip with 1 session a month since last May. Average session maybe about ~5ish hours. I'd guess I'm about 40 hours in. It's all that black! Really all that is left is 2 little strips on my hamstring of wind bar, then ALL color and touch ups. Dana says color sessions fly by, so even though it looks there is still a ton left, he doesn't think it will take long.

  10. Sure, it's still exciting and fun to be part of the club! However.. it gets exhausting when you're just trying to do your job or go to the deli, but of course that all depends on my mood. And chances are, I won't have anything more in common with Joe Schmoe that's covered in tattoos than with Joe Schmoe who doesn't have tattoos. I get what you're saying though dude, I remember that feeling when I started getting tattooed!

Wrapping up my right arm with chris odonnell next week then have an appointment with eddy deutsche during his visit at smith street in february. The piece from eddy will be a hand sized fudo head on my lower leg. Still undecided on how much weirdness I want incorporated into the piece... Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Thanks all. It was a tough session and it always perks me up to get your compliments, haha. I'd say the worst part about sitting is the actual action of either sitting down or standing up. Like ironchef says, the spot gets pretty swollen so, to me, the constant pressure while sitting is comfortable

  18. I got my first spur-of-the-moment tattoo last night, and it was really fun! I was biking through the neighborhood, and started thinking it would be cool to get a going-away present for myself in the form of a tattoo (I've been in DC for a decade but am moving next week). Anyway, so I went into Tattoo Paradise, and Dave Cavalcante put a neat little black & gray compass on the top of my left thigh. I don't have a great photo of it yet, but I like it! I told him it was my first tattoo that I hadn't pondered over for months -- or even years, ha. Definitely a new experience for me, but it was fun! Incidentally, I think I'm done getting tattoos anywhere close to my crotch. jesus it hurts.

  19. Got my walk in at Frith Street yesterday. Happened to get Oliver, he was an absolute gentleman, was a really nice experience overall. If any of you guys know the shop, Dante, Jordan and everyone else were hanging out joking, was so chilled. And I came out with a perfect tat :)

  23. Probably going on Saturday..I think there's a lot of good & mediocre tattooers attending. But they could cut the booths in half, and just have all good tattooers.I personally like the bigger space, because I like to roam around the convention floor checking out all the booths. The only fucked up thing is getting in and out of the convention.

    Book thread

I recently finished The Terror by Dan Simmons, which I enjoyed a lot. The book didn't entirely work for me because I think it could have stood alone as a speculative historical novel without the added supernatural element, but that didn't get in the way of it being a great fun read. I haven't read Dan Simmons before this, but I'll be sure to read some of his other books, especially with what @Mark Bee said above. I'm currently reading Black Wings of Cthulhu, edited by S.T. Joshi. It's an anthology of contemporary "Lovecraftian horror", and it's about what you'd probably expect from that description, so basically a few good stories, but a lot of pastiche. Caitlin R. Kiernan's story I thought was really strong, and I've read another story of hers in a sword and sorcery anthology that was excellent, so I'll have to pick up her books and comics. Though I've previously read the Laird Barron story in this book ("The Broadsword", also published in his book Occultation) it stands up to a reread. I'll have to get his new collection of stories because he's one of the best people writing this kind of horror right now.

  32. Thanks guys, you pretty much summed it up. For me personally as I started getting tattoos at an older age in 20 years time I don't think I will give a shit what they look like, that's even if I am still alive. Had I been younger then maybe I would have thought about it more. It isn't just the tattoos but the experience, the traveling the meeting new people, seeing new sites that is all very much part of it for me and that will always stay with me whether the tattoos do or don't :) I was at Randy Englehards shop last week for a VIP party and there was every top notch artist you could think of there, so I did look at aged stuff and it still all looks fabulous, so I guess there is hope :)

  33. I have posted this in other spots here but I guess this is actually the correct spot. here is my newest tattoo. My tattoo before that was from the same artist, Rev J.R. out of Vicious Ink in Rochester Hills MI. I also got a tattoo at Vicious Ink from one of their apprentices Tim. All of my other work is older and not worth posting :)

  34. Ed Hardy and another tattooist make reference to this subject near the end of tattoo the world. If I remember correctly it's shrugged off fairly casually as flattery and something a successful artist can expect. A pretty mature response(IMO) that they spend very little time on. Sorry I don't recall the other artist but it's at about 15-16 mins left when it's brought up. Of course in a perfect world, such things would not exist and everyone would 'play by the rules' But similarly to the thread where dude tattoos 'DRAKE' across that young lady's head, the FACT is, that if you don't tattoo it, someone else will. Unlike a couple decades ago, the market is full of tattooers of varying skill level, unlike before if a good artist turns you down now, there's another good artist who will take your money and make you a good tattoo. I'm in no way advocating that tattooers should tattoo whatever comes comes through the door, I merely stating the obvious fact that for every customer willing to bend the ethics there's an artist willing to participate. The willingness to participate is is a choice the customer and tattooist have to make. I feel like, just like any other industry, ppl are going to do what they feel is 'right' but ppl are also going to do what they have to do to eat and pay the bills. Similar situations or parallels can be drawn in any industry. Make your personal choice as a collector and artist(in our context) and stick to it. Personally I'm pretty indifferent as to what other ppl get tattooed on their bodies and unless someone is passing your work off as their own, I lean towards looking at it as flattery, but of course I haven't been active artistically in over 15 years, I suppose It's possible I'd feel differently if I made my living making art(if any form).

  41. I finally bought an 8mm player. It hasn't arrived yet and I'm sure there will be problems, but the hope is that by middle of next week I can start capturing footage from tons of 8mm cassettes that I have. Most of the stuff isn't really tattoo related, but Im 100% sure that I have the 1995 Amsterdam tattoo convention video I shot, which includes 22 tattooers working on one (very blue) client. Seeing Alex Binnie, Horiyoshi 3 and Crazy Ace tattoo the same person at the same time...
