Ya know mate, this is how I see it. Weather you sit for 8 hours or 2, the thing about being tattooed is there ain't no short cuts. It's all time under the machine. If ya working on a 30 hour back tattoo, or a 10 hour rib panel, ya still gotta come back to it, ya still gotta work for it, ya still earn it. There ain't no shame in in any time under that hammer man. :)

I am disappointed to see the barbie comment. I think this is a big reason why I don't post pictures of myself here - lame comments. Sad really, because most of the people here are super cool and thoughtful. I too (I saw this is a different thread) think it would be great to see women with tattoos who are not doing the sexy lion pose in a g-string or have to deal with the "show us your tits" mentality. Maybe one day there could be a "locked" area only certain, proven people could see, aways from all the public and trolly stuff.

Hey dudes, maybe listen to women when they say they find something insulting, instead of telling them how they should take it. It's an infantilizing, objectifying and therefore misogynist thing to say, even if you "mean it" as a compliment. And I agree with @SnowyPlover, it's a nice reminder of why being a woman into tattoos can kind of suck.

  16. Yes. It's people's personal choice what they do, who are we to judge right? But, let's say not too long ago, when I started getting tattooed in the 80's, ya never heard of anyone seeking anything to manage the pain of getting tattooed. It would never have been a deciding factor. Times were so much more simpler...one either got tattooed, or one didn't, and if one didn't it was because of one of two reasons. They didn't like tattoos or they were too scared of the pain. Simple. My personal belief is, seeking to mask the pain is kinda cheating. It's like the phrase, no pain no gain. It's like going on a diet of ice cream and cookies, it's like becoming fit by going for a stroll. We all do it at some level, seek the easy way out...every single one of us in some kind of format, it seems to be human nature. There's too many options out there. Slowly wins the race. Take the time, tough it out, the hard experiences in life earns us insight and adds to our knowledge. Yeah, I've used opiates in the past while under the machine, but not to try mask the pain...a lot more simpler than that, just because I liked to get loaded on drugs and alcohol. That's it. On top of that, I can assure you, it does nothing for pain management. All it does is fucks you up and the local pain is the same...at times even worse because of how fucked up you are, ya can't shift the pain. By far, I find the best way to pain manage is focus, straight with the good prep we talk about.

I'm certainly not the type to tell a tattooer to go smaller. Fuck it, if you're gonna do it you may as well do it right!

    Use of Painkillers

You can't compare a medical procedure with getting a tattoo. ...and I will add...I had my tonsils taken out (as an adult). And I would re-tattoo my stomach w/ no painkillers over the 2 week post-tonsillectomy healing period with painkillers, any day of the week !!! Now I've tried a bunch of things to take the edge...somebody called me the Hunter S Thompson of tattoo clients (LOL) for my investigative work earlier in this thread (in the name of science!). But shit that's just bactine, nyquil, pot cookies and booze. I've never tried the numbing cream that makes you feel like your wearing a leather jacket. Maybe I will try that when I finally get going on (the ass section of) my backpiece. Or maybe I won't because I want to feel every second of that fiery fury that I've heard about (thank you LST). But I haven't even heard of half the pill cocktails people are talking about here. I can understand if people want to medicate/numb to push through long or back-to-back sessions, party on your ribs or knee ditch. More power to you. But if you need to default to numbing cream and a handful of pills to get a 2 hour banger on the side of your neck, c'mon. This is tattoo! My point is if you are that scared about the pain or can't take it, maybe reconsider why you want to go through with that tattoo in the first place...tattooing isn't for everyone, but holy shit this new age is using every trick in the book to make it accessible for everyone. You don't need to be a hero...but you also don't need to be a pussy ! To each their own. Maybe I'm being a bit brash. My $0.02 /flameon - - - Updated - - - I may have got into this tattoo mess much later than you Mick, but I couldn't agree more! - - - Updated - - - 7 hour session is NOTHING to feel shame about, that's a mega-sit :) You are bang on @Swifty - we the people, we love tattoos. And people will do whatever it takes to get what they love. peace

    Use of Painkillers

Like I said, do what you will do, but pain that you choose willingly, and that no matter how much we complain, we still GET THROUGH and then CHOOSE AGAIN, is not the same thing as pain that comes from something being wrong with our bodies. Like these conversations need a little goddamn perspective. If you want to dope yourself up, feel free, but don't pretend it's a necessity.

  35. Got this from Theo Mindell while he was visiting Austin for a few days. The guy might be the straight up nicest dude I've met in a long time. And Paco Cendon at electric13 was super nice too and has an awesome shop. I very much underestimated the pain on the back of the thigh, just above the ditch of my knee. It's 3 days later and I'm still limping around.

    Motorcycles

Nice one @Mick Weder Drove up to Wadonga last weekend to pick up a Triumph Bonneville the other half had bought. Stopped in at Bright on the way back to check out the hot rod car show. Trying to decide which direction to go for my next bike. Torn between going for a motard or the Triumph Street Triple. The Suzuki DR-Z400SM appeals to me as something I can chuck around and have fun with, however not the most ideal bike for going for a long cruise, although I believe you can change the seat on them for something more suited for long rides. I've loved the Street Triple from the first time I laid eyes on one and is probably my dream bike.

    finer things in life

a day late but... Ray Bradbury @JPL Nov 12, 1971, on the eve of Mariner 9 going into orbit at Mars “If Only We Had Taller Been” The fence we walked between the years Did bounce us serene. It was a place half in the sky where In the green of leaf and promising of peach We'd reach our hands to touch and almost touch the sky, If we could reach and touch, we said, 'Twould teach us, not to ,never to, be dead. We ached and almost touched that stuff; Our reach was never quite enough. If only we had taller been, And touched God's cuff, His hem, We would not have to go with them Who've gone before, Who, short as us, stood tall as they could stand And hoped by stretching, tall, that they might keep their land, Their home, their hearth, their flesh and soul. But they, like us, were standing in a hole. O, Thomas, will a Race one day stand really tall Across the Void, across the Universe and all? And, measured out with rocket fire, At last put Adam's finger forth As on the Sistene Ceiling, And God's hand come down the other way To measure man and find him Good, And Gift him with Forever's Day? I work for that. Short man, Large dream, I send my rockets forth between my ears, Hoping an inch of Good is worth a pound of years. Aching to hear a voice cry back along the universal Mall: We've reached Alpha Centauri! We're tall, O God, we're tall!

  39. Going pretty big to be honest, i've got my whole back (and arse if required) to fill, so i'm interested to see what Marius comes up with to fill the space. Gonna be some sort of battle royale, definitely want an eagle included so thinking eagle/snake most likely, maybe a skull in there for good measure if it all works together. Honestly though i just love his work, so i'm trying to go in to it with as vague an outline as possible to just let him run with it. Will definitely keep you posted, i'm going to be in Oslo from the 13th, appointment is on the 15th then i'll head back home fairly early the next day. I have no plans on the saturday/sunday so if you are around at all on either of those days, count me in. And thanks for the baccy info, definite no go! At least that means i won't have to change up quite as much money.

  41. No to painkillers here. I think taking them and having them wear off mid-tattoo would be awful and not a fun way to spend the rest of the session. I'd much rather let my endorphins do what they are supposed to and have a reasonably steady pain level to get my head around and deal with. It's worked for me so far.

  42. Thanks, @marley mission and @KVipers! One day I'll take a photo of it healed because they greys have settled in super nicely over the last few years. Also, Thomas Hooper extended my right hand tattoo about halfway up my forearm on top of the myst, which looks pretty cool and ties the whole thing together.

Yay, a photo! Haha. I mentioned this in another thread, but I love seeing pictures of people with tattoos just in regular life doing regular things. It helps me when I'm thinking about placement for future work. I'm anal about it, and I like to be able to picture what I would look like with tattoos in particular places on my body. I wish I had more pictures of myself with my tattoos showing. And sadly now winter is arriving, and all but my face has been covered lately!

UPDATE: Two days of brutality on my back with Henning. This go around we started coloring in the phoenix at Kings Avenue Tattoo. 7 hours on Friday in Long Island, then 6 more hours on Saturday in Manhattan. Henning thinks we need one more full session to complete everything. I think probably 2 more including any touch ups. By the way...I really really hate ribs...and spine....THE WORST. Enjoy the pics.
