    Russian Tattoo Book

Hi guys! There is a quirky little antique book store near me that is open like twice every 5 years, and today happened to be one of those days! I walked in too see if they had any tattoo books and walked out with this cool book I am about to post pics of here!! It's all in Russian. If anyone has any info about this book, or speaks and reads Russian, please let me know!! The barbed wire on the cover evokes a prison yard; perhaps it's about prison tattoos? I asked the bookseller and he said no, just tattoos, but he doesn't speak Russian either. :p Here are some pics I snapped! I will snap or scan more if there's interest. Also: I no can without womans.

So not been on here for a while but I have finally had the 3rd session on my back after a short break... I went on holiday. It definitely felt like we hit quite a lot this time round but it might just be that we were moving a little bit all over. So to add to the conversation going on above I definitely prefer to gradually work from one area to another rather than jumping all around. Suddenly moving to a new spot really sucks. Anyway this is how the progress is looking.

  5. Day 1 & 2 with Silvano Fiato 12 hours yesterday on this and 8 more today, still not finished. Coming back in 4 weeks time to Silvano the day after Florian to fill in the knee, do some more detail to the bottom part. He has done some very heavy saturation so that it will look great when healed. Going back next June to do the back of the calf. I love Lee Jeffries stuff so obviously we based it around his works. For those that don't know his work, link below if interested :) Lee Jeffries - https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=tablet-android-google&espv=1&sboxchip=Images&tbm=isch&q=lee+jeffries+homeless&revid=1539496463&sa=X&ei=MZAHVLbOIKbhywPamYHoCg&ved=0CB0Q1QIoAA&dpr=2&biw=600&bih=800 Sorry for the shit phone pic, Silvano will post some better ones soon.

Working on my second sleeve. Both were started on bare arms so I could have a cohesive theme. Both are Japanese style and my back piece flows into both of them.

    Hi Im Ryan

Exactly. Having a tattoo wont help with us women but the process of getting one could quite possibly help you with yourself. The quotey thing is not such a good plan, TBH, for a myriad of reasons. But, by all means apply that sentiment to taking full ownership of your body by tattooing it, if you will. No need at all to be literal or cryptic, spending the next 50 years explaining will be a pain the ass. Go for something big, powerful and protective, indeed. Panther, dragon, eagle, whatever. Something you find visually appealing. This, to my mind, is unnecessary, cuntish bullying.

    Hi Im Ryan

I'd take moped and flip flops guy. Rolex and wanky suit guy sounds... well... wanky. :p Ryan, you have the benefit here of many "hot girls" who are into tattoos responding to your post (at least I imagine everyone who posts on LST to be a beautiful person. Right?) Getting a tattoo is not going to make a difference. Your personality and confidence will. By all means get an awesome tattoo, but do it for yourself. That is way cooler than getting a tattoo that you perceive will make you cool in the eyes of someone else. Girls can sniff that crap out really easily, and it is a huge turn off. No-one likes a try hard. Being true to yourself and being comfortable in your own skin is attractive. Anyway, in response to what you actually asked... phoenix? Classic subject, awesome to look at, carries the sentiment of the quote without being a quote...

    Sleeves

I'm working on a theme of "awesome tattoos". Same theme on both arms, actually. - - - Updated - - - But seriously though, I did start out with the idea of a theme on my left arm, but I've kind of relaxed it as time has passed. I'm kind of down to this: Left arm - bright and bold. Right arm, dark(er) and bold. We'll see how my plan holds up as I get more coverage.

I'd be interested to see how much crossover there is between this book and the criminal encyclopedias. Who wrote the ones you have? The author's romanized name is Lev Mil'ianenkov (undoubtedly any of you who have turned to google since hearing the title have discovered this for yourself - stating for the record!). I found a few books that referenced this book. This is making for some interesting hunting around, that's for sure. I will post anything interesting I find.

Thanks a lot @ironchef. @hogg it is indeed Ian's work. It's turning out to be so much more than I imagined at the start. He reckons that we've got just one more session on the outline which is great news. I can't wait to see it fully formed and start making it come to life.

  31. @brunt Check out: Chris Ayalin / Liberty Tattoo (also Emily Nelson) Chris Adams / Fistful of Metal Hannah Sandstrom / Dark Age (also Derek Noble, Jesse Roberts) Thomas Graham / Supergenius Tattoo Sara Purr / Rabid Hands (also Jerad Shealey) I feel like there are quite a few "alsos" that I've missed, but bottom line is you can get a solid tattoo in Seattle.

It's weird to me that shop would be the one that stood out to you. Honestly next to the stuff people have suggested this stuff looks a little amateur. One of the guys has more of the client in his pictures than the tattoo, and the shading in a lot of these tattoos isn't very smooth and in some cases, not there it's more like black and white than black and grey. All I am saying is if you don't like the suggestions so far I would keep looking.

  40. max kuhn tattooed my whole back in around 12 hours total. it didn't seem to be going by quick while i was getting done but thinking about over it now that it is finished i think i lucked out. mario desa is super quick too. outlined a scimitar on my stomach in literally 10 minutes around 2 years ago. the whole thing took about an hour and 20 minutes which again i'm grateful for because it was pretty awful. timmy tatts & lowercase j are both very fast too. timmy outlined a friends rock of ages backpiece is 45 minutes!

@hogg & Mark Bee. The term "bikie" is another media term only. Many years ago, a person would come close to having his mouth shut for even using such a derogatory term. These days with everyone becoming an expert as to what's written in the papers and what they see on the news, pfft, it just becomes another little piece of history that gets lost and some of us become a little too tired in trying to keep it alive. Another term "gang" is also a media typo. They're "clubs". Again, if that needs to be elaborated on, then it just ain't worth the time. Those of us who had/ have origins from the Oi days know how retarded the media terms to "skinhead or punk gangs" appear. Same shit. Back to the tattoo topic. This is what we get when we offer mainstream a glimpse into our culture. We create opposing cultures with two completely different takes on the subject, and that has been the sad part for me. It's like the day when I was getting tattooed in High St, Fremantle Western Australia back in 93, directly opposite the Workers Club, oh, in an old time "biker" run art studio...sorry, tattoo fuckin shop...these were the days Tattooers started charging like $100 an hour!! After we had completed our 4 pack of Rum and the 3 hour tattoo, I laid out $300 on the chair to complete our deal. Old mate looks me in the eye, handed me back half my cash and said...mate, the day I start charging top dollar for tattoos is the day I may as well be just tattooing Drs and fuckin lawyers. Fuck taking it away from the working man where it belongs. And that was my very 1st encounter in that particular shop.

Slightly off-topic, but is "bikie" actually strine slang for "biker"? Because that is adorable. Also, I'm with @Mick Weder when it comes to hands and neck tattoos. Not to sound like an old guy (too late!), but there used to be rules to this shit.

I agree with @Mick Weder and @SeeSea here and with regard to copyright, looking at pictures of Jun Cha's tattoos it looks like a lot of them draw on reference from Renaissance sculpture. Of course there's interpretation there, composing it to work as a tattoo, actually tattooing it, etc., but regardless it isn't like his tattoos spring purely from his imagination. When contracts and the possibility of lawyers is involved, it isn't really tattooing anymore to me.

QUOTE]rather than some bikie who couldn't give two fucks about the tattoo's just wants to collect his $$$ This, my friend... is a very bold statement. Some of the most honourable men I know may meet this judgemental opinion. I wouldn't walk into an art gallery if you paid me. It would bore me to tears. It appears very apparent that tattooing for you & I hold two completely different cultural origins. And with that, for respect to this forum, I shall leave this at that. Enjoy your art collection champ.

Roper has covered a large majority of Dana's torso (or maybe the entire thing, I can't remember exactly) and it's amazing. This makes me think of the SNL skit where they talk about the fabled salesman Bill Brasky, and each story just keeps building off of the others. Roper once tattooed the Pharoh's Horses on the Pharoh's horses.

  50. Thank you for bringing this up! Reading that Robert Ryan interview in TCM really affirmed some personal superstitions about tattoos for me. I don't like to tattoo symbols of evil, as far as my own comfort zone goes. Simply speaking, a symbol is a distilled image intended to invoke a very specific idea/memory/feeling/desire. Because of this immediate association, symbols are very powerful visual tools. Brand logos are an accessible and modern example of how a symbol can instantaneously trigger a reaction in a person. Alphabets are also a good example. I think the reason why most clients have a hard time understanding this is because it is a very ideologically superstitious practice on my behalf, and also because the idea of a tattooed symbol of evil having real-life repercussions seems magical at best. If symbol X triggers reaction a, b, or c in nearly anyone who looks at it, and all of which are negative reactions/feelings, I don't want to be the means by which that negativity is brought into the world. That's really all that it comes down to I guess. (on a side note, I think that there is a huge difference between the power of symbols and the power of illustrations.)
