  4. Ah what, the hell, I'll give this a try this month. This was done by Thomas Hooper in five sessions between October 2012 and June 2013, mostly at Saved but with one session at the Rochester Convention:

  8. My father, who has no tattoos and is Catholic, asked me what would happen if I met the perfect man but he hated my tattoos... My response :"If he is the perfect man, then he'd love my tattoos." He also used to teach me as a kid that tattoos will make you go to hell, but has since reversed his opinion on that.

  9. Great idea for a thread! I'm sure I'll think of many things to add to this thread but the first one that comes to mind is how this plainskinned girl at work was asking about my tattoos and she was super complimentary about them, really appreciated that they're nice, well made tattoos and then she commented that I clearly cared a lot about my tattoos "unlike those other people who get them on dares". Other than the fact that it seems most people who have a tattoo or two put way too much thought and meaning into their tattoos, I am kind of offended by the comment because I would get a tattoo on a dare.

  10. Things people say to us about our tattoos have been mentioned in many threads, but I thought it might be fun to read quick snippets of what people say all in one place. We were just on a 2 week trip visiting family in MA & CT. We swung by Custom Cobra while in MA, nice shop but we didn't get any tattoos. Here are a couple one liners from the trip: MIL to hubby, "You're thinking of getting another one?" That struck me as funny because of the word one. FIL to hubby during same conversation, "You know what they say...sometimes less is more!" My friend's little 5-year-old son saw my arm and was impressed with the tiger (his favorite animal) but still said, "You're gonna be sorry." My friend told me he got that from his uncle. I set him straight. Friend of my husband's family saw my sleeve and asked, "Is that a real tattoo?" None of the comments were mean-spirited and I'm not easily offended, they were just kind of funny to me.

  11. Mental effort. Hard work and repetition. In my opinion drawing (like most 'creative' endeavours) is roughly: 30% physical, 60% mental (around two thirds of this percentage is learning to 'see' the rest is thinking and analysing) 10% talent.

I've got an appointment with Paul Dobleman in September, planning on getting a girls head on my thigh. Depending on finances I really want to get back to Frith Street Street to get my other calf started,it's looking a bit bare next to its tattooed partner :-)

  18. im going to be the grumpy old curmudgeon who offers nothing to the thread on topic save for mentioning my absolute hatred of the term plainskin. My friend Shannon tried to start that as a phrase years ago, not sure if this is the ripple from that, but its like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Sorry for interrupting.

  19. I get a lot of "I never would've guessed you have tattoos!" often followed by something along the lines of "but you look so nice!!"

  20. No I do not. I also don't understand what you are trying to get at with this thread.

  21. wow that's quite a question.....perseverence from an early age.....tattooing is not a reason to start drawing in my opinion, drawing for the sake of drawing ,awesome....but I should hope that's not youre angle.

  25. I think the "meaning" issue is a real barrier for people when it comes to getting tattoos. At least it was for me. Before I had any tattoos I kind of didn't bother because I didn't know what I would get that would have enough meaning to have it written into my skin. My first tattoo was about my family a couple of years after the birth of my daughter. With my next few tattoos I was still kind of over thinking it and coming up with wild stories to tell myself about why what I wanted was a good idea. Now that I am more comfortable with tattoos in general (I've realized that nothing horrible has happened) I am more able to find enough meaning in just thinking it's cool.

  31. If you ignore the subject matter and just look at the work, you will see washed out color. A few of the tattoos look like they are 15 years old. Line work is inconsistent, and some of it is strangely drawn. The last dragon is really odd. What is going on with the belly scales? It looks like and over stuffed sausage ready to pop.

  34. I had a similar experience where I answered the door wearing a dress and my neighbor was like "I never thought a conservative woman like yourself would have tattoos." I responded with "what makes you think I'm conservative? And why can't classy ladies get tattooed?" He has a hard time answering considering you shouldn't judge people after only talking to them once or twice!

  35. sorry @ShawnPorter, it cracks me up. I learned it here, along with squidpants, though I've never used that one in a sentence until just now. I find it to be a pretty good quick way to describe a non-tattooed person. It is impossible to please everyone w/our word choices. I get it, there are plenty of words that annoy me, too.

  36. You would probably get more response without the attitude. That's an honest opinion. And no I don't like them. Too generic.

  37. This is not something that has explicitly been said but I get a strong sense that my family thinks my wife's tattoos are cool because she is an artist but my tattoos are dumb because I'm just a regular guy who suddenly started getting tattooed at age 38.

I realize some of you get to do this often but it genuinely was a great time for me. I would have been happy to spend the whole afternoon talking tattoos but didnt want to be a "hang around"

  41. "Do your sleeves keep your arms warm?" "Are they done with ink?" "How long do they last?" And the only one that annoyed me "Why are you covered in tattoos if you can't change them?" (after I told this guy, who was looking to get tattooed, that you can't just remove them and replace them with a different design if you change your mind for any reason)

I'm sorry about Anthea. I love kitties. My husband isn't much of a cat person..not like me and my craziness. Our first cat together was a stray that showed up at his place out in the country, hiding in the barn/garage from they coyotes. Friendly as all get out. It was winter and we'd open up the door and find the cat balanced on the ledge where the screen had gotten knocked out like hey hey lookit me! He was going out hunting one day and said if the dogs would accept the cat, he would keep it. (we didn't live together) He came home to find me curled up on the couch w/the cat and all three pit bulls. She ruled the roost from day one. We had her 11 years and had to have her put to sleep two years ago b/c of her health. Bella was a tortoiseshell. We got a tortie kitten from my parents, Britta, after we got married, and she's about 11 now too..crabby ole lady. Bella and Britta used to fight-Bella would wrap her front legs around Britta's neck, pick her up and body slam her to the ground. We have a grey and white female, Opilio, who is obsessed w/our daughter, but can't be bothered w/the rest of us. Last November I got another tortie from a shelter. I needed her and she needed me. Losing Bella left such a hole in my heart. So, I got her, named her Clementine Isabelle, and just completely adore her. My husband was angry, but all it took was the first time she jumped up on his lap and sprawled out on him, kneading her paws in his beard, and he was in love with her too.

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

This is a portrait of my pops that I had done last week by Juan Arreguin (El Super) in his shop Superfly Tattoo here in Leon Guanajuato Mexico. If any of you are from Vancouver, you might recognize the name because he used to work at Rain City. August 12th is my fathers birthday, and the National Airborne Day is August 16th. Figured this would be a good way to honor him.

People are honestly just trying to help you out. You might find some responses perhaps a little snarky, but I would hope you can see it from their side. People on this site are passionate about their work, trying to make sure that people are educated enough to take care of their current and future art. If you ask a question and then dismiss the response, that seems disrespectful, not only to them but to the art itself. Go to reddit if you just want to ignore people. Tattoing isn't just a fad to them, some shiny object to be picked up one second only to be discarded and forgotten the next. If you are willing to put something on your body, it shouldn't be for you either. You may have yolo'd your way into this tattoo, but respect it enough to take care of it so that it doesn't look like crud down the road. Best of luck, have fun playing blackjack.
