I've never been tattooed with a tebori but the technique seems to differ in that the tebori is longer and is applied using both hands, the thumb is used to support and direct the business end of the tool. The hand tool that Adam uses is more the size and shape of a pencil and is held in the same way. The needles are the same tattoo needles used in regular tattoo machines. It hurt less than being tattooed with a machine but by the end it was getting a bit sore. I was supprised how quickly it was done (it's about hand sized, across the wings of the moth). About three and a half hours of tattooing. One major difference, for a lower leg tattoo, is the absence of any swelling or lower leg pain. Usually I suffer really badly with, post tattoo leg swelling and pain.

sorry about the random posts and your welcome to the comments about my tattoo posts im still not used to tagging people, Eric told me a story about mike malone he finished my tattoo, and told me for my help it would be a free tattoo, i tried to tip him, and he told me "i said it was free." he then proceeded to tell me to never double cross a tattooer he said "i told you it would be free and thats what it is, mike malone told me a story about a tattoo he did at china sea, said he did a panther on a kid and when he turned his back to break his station down the kid fled the shop without paying, he told me that as soon as the kid made it into the street he was hit and killed by a bus, and thats why you never double cross a tattooer." my mouth was dropped by how awesome this story was haha. thanks again for checking out my stuff!

When I had my ribs done, Nick used some kind of numbing wipe before he put the col;or in. For awhile, all I could feel was that he was doing some damn thing there. As a matter of course, I eat 7.5 of vicodin on my way in to sit, and if it goes longer than 3 hours or so, I'll eat another. When I got my ribs done, I added a 5mg. Valium to that, and yeah...it was like, all beautiful! But hey-I came up in the 60's and 70's, you know, better living through chemistry.

I think the answer to your question is in how you're defining a backpiece. Yes, if it's a traditional style japanese piece that goes from neck to knees then it might easily take up to 100 hours. However, what if it's american traditional or a smaller japanese-style piece that only goes to the waist? That'll take a significant amount of time off. If it's black and grey, or has a significant amount of negative space, then even more. I think my backpiece would fit into this category - it took around 25 hours (OK, maybe 25-30...) :- This backpiece, by Xam (The Family Business Tattoo, London) was done in 16 hours:- Now that does blow my mind. Similarly, I've seen other backpieces on that scale banged out in short spaces of time, attributed to people like Filip Leu.

I have never seen solid black out work that looks good. I think all the wrinkles and imperfections in your skin stand out more with a solid black sleeve and even if it's solid it never really looks solid black it's kindy of patchy. There are so many cool things you can get tattooed on you, and so many people like myself that would kill for some blank space on our arms to tattoo.

Iggy Vans, Idle Hand Tattoo in SF. I know of one person on LST that has something from him, but I don't here about him much. Very no frills, solid traditional work. Tattooing professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1994, Iggy Vans began his career at Erno Szabady's now-legendary studio on Fillmore St., in the Lower Haight, as well as at Erno's sister shop on Front St. in Santa Cruz. He has also tattooed at Everlasting (on McAllister St.), Freddy Corbin's Tattoo 13 in Oakland, Lyle Tuttle's on Columbus Ave. & at the original Picture Machine on Geary Blvd. & 4th Ave. After all those years moving around, Iggy is very proud to be back in the Lower Haight, as a senior artist on the staff at Idle Hand, since January 2005.

Ah that's awesome man, looking forward to seeing it in 2013! That is indeed an awesome tibetan skull! Filip Leu's work is obviously amazing... he is one of the few artists that I read about when I first started getting seriously interested in tattooing who is still talked about regularly today I think. I imagine that getting work from him is a serious challenge! I usually prefer colour tattoos but find his black and grey stuff insanely good. Thanks for this... that is the sort of size and placement I'm thinking I would like. Bet it stung! Not sure how long a sitting I could hack on my ribs, I was awful when I got my back done, I think the tattooer hated me a bit...arms and thighs seem alright to me...but I'm hella scared of the ribs! Here are a couple of drawings I like, first by a guy called Rodrigo Morbeck, second by Beppe Shiro - I know nothing about these artists, just found the images on an instagram search.

doesnt sound much like contrast actually; just 2 different tattoos on the same person. when i think contrast, i think of 2 things that compliment each other to bring it together as a whole. this just sounds like and will look like a huge cover-up on one arm, and a nice sleeve on the other arm. the only contrast will be interesting sleeve/boring sleeve.

this is by zach nelligan. straight up team logos are lame, but I’m totally down with a tattoo like this one. Zach also posted another baseball tattoo with the diamond and some other things incorporated. It was really awesome. I love baseball-grew up playing it-so at some point I know that I’d like to get a baseball related tattoo. edit-the one thing i don't like about this tattoo is the mustacheod gentleman. i really don't like the whole 1800s/1900s gentleman with mustache designs, but this is still an awesome sports tattoo. if i'd have gotten this, the dude just wouldn't have the mustache.

Im new to the board, my name is matthew mcclain, i am 20 years old, I tattoo at Bombs Away Tattoo in the great military town of Jacksonville North Carolina. I was apprenticed by an amazing artist and person named Bart Andrews, i have had amazing experiances that i am grateful for as well as people i have gotten to work with, Im a fan of bold traditional tattoos, guns, motorcycles, skateboards, and having a good time. I am interested in learning everything i can in this life time about the amazing craft that tattooing is. I figured i would make a profile on this board for down time when im not painting drawing, or at the shop. Great artists are typically self assured, competant, secure and therefore = devoid of drama. For the non-tattooed viewer this show is just a Jerry Springer freak show, and tattoos are just a vehicle for the drama. We who like the art are way in the minority on this issue.

I think I mentioned somewhere once that getting my butt worked on wasn't all that bad, well...I change my mind. That's over the top awful. Shading isn't bad, but having it outlined is horrible. Previously the artist outlined and shaded my right side for my backpiece, now she's starting on the left. This time I was squirming through the whole process. My body would just twitch involuntarily. That said it'll be nice when it's finished. It's odd walking around knowing you've one bum cheek completely covered in black and the other pale as the full moon ;-)

Please read further back into the post, as most of the new topics that come up in this thread have already been addressed... Most of the "canvases" aren't coming back for a second sitting... And who knows if they would even want to? Seriously? And, when at a convention, and someone walks up asking for a piece, I know what is possible to accomplish, as opposed to some unrealistic opinion of how amazing Richard is, I know what can be done, and what will need more then one sitting. It's one of those don't bite off more then you can chew things... Knowing one's limitations is a good thing.

I started out thinking I was going to get a whole leg of beer logos tattooed on me, I ended up with 2 that made pretty good tattoos and after seeing how bad some others have turned out decided to fill up my leg with traditional stuff instead. Liverpool-themed tattoo by Ross Nagle, might be the sort of thing the OP was talking about being possible (i.e a trad take on it). I like some of the boxing tattoos floating around from the likes of Xam etc. This is one is a BKB (bare knuckle boxing) one by Chris Smith, Chicago. Guess it's about the symbolism or idea of what the sport represents more than the sport itself, but it still qualifies, right?

I have to admit that I've wanted my septum pierced for about 5 years now. I know it's trendy, but I like how it looks. I was thinking I might get it done by my birthday or with my first paycheck from my new job. It's hard to set that money aside though when there's sooo many good tattoos to get out there...

I will be there with my wife on Saturday and Sunday. I have no appointments scheduled (considering i have appointments on my back the next two staurdays and a consult with Horitomo to final design and discuss when we are starting), but my wife has an appointment with Valerie Vargas on Sunday.

He's well-known in these parts, but I haven't seen much mention of Dave Cummings from PSC Tattoo, Montreal on LST: - - - Updated - - - Another local guy who I feel deserves some recognition (again, pretty well-known locally) is Pol from Pol Tattoo, Montreal.

Most my colleagues and I work from a Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction framework which not only has great research to support change but also change we've seen facilitated by individuals more often than not.

Does your daughter have a history of mental illness or just the drug addiction? If she does have some form mental illness then she will most likely need to be treated for that before anything can happen with her drug addiction. Is it just cocaine or is it other drugs as well? Does she use needles? If so is she getting tested for HIV and Hepatitis on a regular basis? I think that there has been some great advice given by people with a lot of hands on experience, but without a more complete picture of your daughter's life it makes it hard to know what is the right approach.

Just personal experience here. Clean and sober 5 years earlier this month and 30 years old now. The best thing my mom ever did for me was kick me out. Oddly enough she's a school teacher too. She's been a guidance counselor at an elementary school for almost 20 years now. I spent a day in a homeless shelter and was able to get in to a rehab program the salvation army runs for homeless people. It was a bit religious for my taste, but it was free, and it really helped. If you do some digging there are actually quite a few rehab(ish) places that are basically free of charge. I wouldn't call what happened to me an ultimatum or an intervention. She came home to find me passed out drunk on the couch and when I left she called the police. She came to visit me in jail after that and told me she could get me into this rehab place if I wanted, or I was on my own. She's my biggest supporter today, and we've got a great relationship. I know it's hard, and it's a shit decision to have to make, but I don't know anyone who got clean living with mommy and daddy. It's probably happened a few times, I just don't know of any. Just know there's a world of love out there, and there is help. Welcome to Al-Anon Family Groups

I was watching that show intervention,and the drug therapist said that relapse is part of recovery.I would have to agree with that for at least 50% of addicts.I used to smoke PCP everyday for years,and rob money from my brother and mother until my mom had enough and said either go to rehab,or get out of the house.I was 23yrs old at this time.I wen't to rehab,and after two days there,i called a taxi,and left the place.when i got home she said either go back to rehab,or get out of the house.well i ended up going back to rehab for 23 days,and when i got out,i was straight for 5yrs without meetings or anything,but i was so depressed,i ended up having a few beers one day.After i relapsed,i started going to meetings,and have been sober for 17yrs. Recovery is a one day at a time thing,that lasts a lifetime.The real problem is the person,not the drugs.We just try to escape ourselves through the use of drugs,because we don't like the way we feel.I would also suggest going to some Al-Anon meetings to better understand your daughter's addiction.
