  4. I'm leaving my academic teaching gig to take a job as a scientific illustrator for an excavation in Brazil next year. I get to do art for a living for a little while, and I am so fucking stoked. I'm also taking a printmaking class this semester, and it's the most fun I've had in any class, ever. Not sure why I love this really hard, really time-consuming process, but it turns out I think lithography is the shit.

  9. This isn't directed as a dig at the OP, because I understand how hard it can be to try to book an appointment, especially when we are talking about an international matter, but just maybe some insight on how to approach getting tattooed. That being said, is there anyone who books appointments over Instagram. I always see people commenting on posts trying telling tattooers to call them or email them if they have an appointment available or expecting them to comment back with a price quote of an idea that only exists in their own mind. If you want tattooers to take you seriously (and not just ignore you) you should always look for contact info on people's social media page, most of the time the easiest and prefered way to get ahold of someone is posted clearly, secondly if possible always go to the shop in person (if possible), if not call the shop and ask the best way to book appointment with the person you are looking for. 99% of the time you if you follow this, it's end of story, but if you have to contact someone through social media, make sure it's a private message and make sure you mention that you tried to contact them through conventional routes. Be clear, concise, and let them know you are willing to lay down a deposit to your paypal to secure time with them. Also give tattooers a week to respond before you send follow up emails, or call the shop again.

  12. That's awesome @exume Myke Chambers seems like a great guy by all accounts. My girl just had her consultation with Henry Lewis for a banner and script under her existing sugar skull back piece that she got from him a few years ago.

  17. Hi there. So i've been lurking the threads on here for about half a year, have seen all the artist videos on Youtube and only just joined as a member. I'm 21 years old, and work as a studio assistant/counter hand in a tattoo shop in Sydney. I'm into western traditional, anything ranging from the old Bert Grimm, Ben Corday, George Burchett stuff, to the Spider Murphys asthetic, to the Dan Higgs Jeff Zuck sort of stuff and of course the Smith Street sort of stuff. Decided to join so i can communicate with other Tattoo enthusiasts from around the world and to be able to see work coming from all over the world.

  22. I would absolutely, 100 times out of 100, go for one coherent backpiece. Arms and legs look great (to me) with small pieces all over, and also look great with one well thought out, flowing sleeve. When it comes to the back though, it just looks so wrong (to me) with small pieces here and there, or even filled up with different pieces. I guess it's because it becomes very cluttered and unreadable, the back is a canvas that you can use for one big striking image, it seems like a waste not to use it for its full potential!

  23. The people who get tattooed by their friends out of their house aren't going for quality. But there's plenty of people I've met who have bad work that they got in a shop, and they think its good. I met this dude last month in the city who had a sleeve of what he called a skin rip of an Italian flag, and it was pretty bad work.I ended up telling him that I thought the artist didn't do a good job,and gave him some business cards and websites to some good shops in his town.I told him I was just being honest, and not trying to put down his work, but trying to help him get it fixed up,and he was thankful of that.

  26. Why would you find it awkward? You know, not everybody has it lucky and can end up with awesome tattoos. I have a couple I am not super proud of, but we live and learn. You might have an opportunity to change a persons life by referring them to a good artist. One good tattoo can overshadow all of those bad ones in an instant. Be cool to people who are just trying to be cool to you. Take compliments in stride, as long as they aren't being weirdos or freaking you out.

  29. There was a thread about "dotwork" a while ago and I got fairly involved and possibly upset a few people. Check it out, I think I already answered the question posed by your thread title. Also, the word "fad" is inherently insulting in modern usage - but you knew that already. While researching tattoos, tattooing, tattoo styles, tattoo history and tattooers is interesting and probably fun. It's still kinda like researching swimming. Most of it's value comes from being involved, taking part, doing it, getting it done and having it be part of your life. Then again... On a long enough time scale, ALL tattooing since Ed Hardy opened the first appointment-only studio is a fad. Sailors going to war, getting tattooed in Honolulu was a fad. High-Society Europeans shipping esteemed Japanese irezumi artists over to tattoo dragons on them in the 1800's was a fad. Internet forums will be seen to be a fad. Finally, tattoo customers stressing about being period-correct like vintage clothing aficionados will be seen to be a fad of the early 21st century.

  35. On the subject of women and aging and tattoos and all of that: My tattoos make me so much hotter. There, I said it. Not ONLY that - I never felt comfortable in my own skin growing up. There was always something wrong every time I looked in the mirror. Part of that was adolescence, part body image weirdness handed down via television and magazines, and part jerky people around me. Anyway - I feel more comfortable in my adorned skin. This, in turn, helps me project confidence, which is helpful in so many different aspects of life. I will feel like a bad ass (70/80/90) year old when I am covered in tattoos! Also, I look better and better as I get older, soooo...I'm stoked. Tattoos on older women are hoooottt and awesome and badass. :D

  40. A couple years ago a guy came in and showed us his new Lum tattoo and point out that it didn't have any dicks in it (his other Lum tattoos clearly had dicks in them). Well it didn't have any dicks in it, but the fish he got couldn't have been drawn more like a dick, but we let him have his victory. On the other hand i have seen quite a few Lum tattoos lately that don't have dicks in them. Ashley keeps talking about setting something up with Lum, and I say I will tag along and get a little souvenir tattoo, but at this point I just need to set something up and drag his ass down there.

  41. Wow, Stanley Moskowitz did my 1st tattoo in 1977. The shop was bought out by this guy Mike in 1997 and he preserved a lot of the memorabilia from the original S&W Tattoo shop. The stuff is awesome. I also had some work done by Wayne Loftain, who is now in Florida and not tattooing. JC Fly in Medford did my fu-dog in 1982, he's been gone for years but his son Greg is tattooing and does a nice job. Rob

See a better picture of it in the august contest. The front is just a collection of good and bad tattoos. Some day the owl is going to taste the laser..
