  1. I had a flu shot last year. The doctor told me he stuck the needle right into the eye (of my Hannya tattoo). I think he quite enjoyed doing that.

  2. Tetanus in one arm, steroid shot in the other. Both are fine, but just in case of reaction an empty space is best. Ironically, the free space on my Poseidon tattoo is his arm...which is also my arm....arm-ception

  3. @Dan S, my favorite part about both of those is how the peeps are like "yeah, it's a fucking big cat, whatever though, I'd rather be eating peanut butter." Whereas the cats are like "PLEASE, GOD!! WHY WON'T YOU LOVE ME?!!?"

  6. I found this, but I can't find the book for sale or the author's name anywhere..... Referencing the popular book, "Hail to the Tat: An Illustrated History of Presidential Tattoos," 35 of the 43 presidents sported skin art. Amongst the First Citizen's tattoos, the most popular were on the arm, thus starting the tradition that no American President can be photographed wearing a tank top. The most famous tattoo involved a small eagle holding a broad sword (demonstrated in the first source) fighting Jack "Galveston Giant" Johnson. Additionally, several presidential tattoos stand out: Andrew Jackson sported a tomahawk that ran the length of the inside of his left leg; James K. Polk is historically known to be the first white man to have a Chinese character as a tattoo (the symbol for "eager"); James Buchanon with a scantily-clad brunette on his chest as well as the acronym "BFL" in six inch lettering on his abdomen (BFL standing for "bachelor for life"); and William McKinley with a cartoon representation of himself as the Monopoly man carrying a bulging sack with a $ symbol.

    Old tattoo photos

Found this one of Tony D'Annessa on Getty Images. They say the photo is from 1955, but Tony started tattooing in 1958 so who knows exactly when the photo is from. And one of Tony from the 4th of July this past year, posted by Dave Cummings on his instagram: That also answers the question about what a tattoo will look like with a scar through it: hard as fucking nails.

  8. King Edward was tattooed by Hori Chiyo who tattooed many royal personages . His sons , the Duke of Clarence and the Duke of York , later King George V also sought out Hori Chiyo when the two brothers served as midshipmen aboard H.M.S Bacchante which visited Yokohama in 1882 .

  12. Temple is by far the coolest shop I've ever been to. I got tattooed there by Freddy this past summer and I'm getting tattooed by Jason Mcafee this Saturday. Super pumped about it. Easily one of the coolest places I've ever been.

  15. Franklin Pierce had full sleeves depicting Greek mythological figures fighting dragons. He had an affinity for both Greek mythology and Asian cultures, so he let his brother-in-law, Obadiah Appleton practice his new trade. Unfortunately for Pierce, Obadiah's tattoo work was as bad as his previous career as a failed wagon builder. Pierce therefore always wore sleeves and threatened the life of anyone making a portrait if they even suggested depicting the tattoos. Also, Dwight Eisenhower has an ace of spades on his right butt cheek. I don't know if any of this is true, but I found it quite amusing.

  19. They do try with certain shots to avoid the ink, especially if it's fresh, it has to do with the cells that break stuff down (same cells that cause tattoos to fade) are also how inter-muscular shots are absorbed into the body.. forgive me I'm blanking on the actual terms, pretty much if you aggregate the area (sun burn, dead virus cells, ect) the "eater" cells will break down bits of the tattoo. (this causes fading/ the no longer clean smooth outline you once had on the microscopic level) I'd play it safe and ask to get it some where else, there are a few locations for IM shots :) Hope that kinda helps?

  23. From ages 17-27, all I had done was my left sleeve, and some random one-offs. I think I'm glad I took it slow back then, because now that I have the time/money, I've been getting tattooed at LEAST once a month for 5+ hours each session. One week I got 5 new pieces. And it's good tattoos now, not the BS I was getting when I was younger. I still have my left leg, right arm (save for a small spot), full torso and back, feet, hands, and neck to get done. In all honesty I don't think there's enough time on this earth for me to get as many as I want.

  24. @hogg @slayer9019 I didn't say anything out of respect for the guys at the shop and because it isn't something that I was ready to advertise. Right now I just work there and do anything that anyone wants me to. I am basically the shop bitch. The understanding with everyone is that if they feel comfortable with me and feel like I have earned being there, they may offer me an apprenticeship. I don't know how far off that is, nor do I care. I do everything I can to help everyone who walks in and everyone who works there. Right now, the opportunity to learn to tattoo is secondary and my responsibility to the guys at the shop and the customers is first. I intend to protect and cherish the tattoo world I have come to love. I believe the way to do that is not to expect handouts or free information. Everything is earned and I want to earn anything I get.

  27. So I got tattooed two weeks ago and am due for another session on my back at the end of the month, so I have really not been in "need" of new work lately, but a local shop had a fundraiser yesterday for a family affected by domestic violence, and I could not resist stopping in to get something for a good cause. I got this tiny but awesome little flower that magically fit perfectly between the two larger pieces on my thigh, like it was fate! Done by the fabulous Eilo at MTL Tattoo here in Montreal. I love it. (Please pay no attention to my torch, which is still healing and majorly flaky!)

  31. Both of my parents have tattoos, so telling them about my own ink was never a worry (I was honestly more concerned about telling them I was moving across the country with my boyfriend- now fiance- for school). As a kid I remember taking markers to my dad's arm to color in a piece that he only had the outline of (after it was healed of course), he was my living breathing coloring book! I think my parents were actually slightly disappointed that I didn't ask them to come with me and be part of my first tattoo experience.

  32. My mom didn't seem too pleased when I told her I was getting a tattoo. She said, "well you'd better ask your sister about how much it hurt!" I think to try and dissuade me. As if I'm going to not do something that my little sister was able to do twice because it was going to hurt a bit. So of course I went ahead with it. I mean, really. I was 34 years old. She's not the boss of me!

  40. I was 14 years old when i received my first tattoo, it was on an old futon bed, in a living room of a house party we were having, i was big into punk rock and hardcore music and skateboards that was pretty much my life, so i figured what the hell lets put something on my leg. so i got "skate & annoy" on the back of my leg, the kid ran out of liners and lined it with the side of a shader (ouch) whip shaded it with black and filled the letters in green. the letters are all oozy and drippy looking with the design and i was so pumped on it. well hiding it from my dad and mom was the hard part, i never wore shorts. during the summer every beach trip my family ever had was avoided, i did a damn good job at hiding it. i hid it all the way until i was 18 years old and finally got one legally. i showed my parents my new tattoo, and they loved it. I then started off with "theres one more thing i have to show you" i pulled up my pant leg and told them the story about how i got it when i was 14 and how i had dodged them with it for 4 years. my dad is a very southern working class man, one of those dont talk much kind of guys, he looks at my leg and stares at me and goes "why didn't you tell me? i wouldnt of been all that upset." so all that family time i miss i could of been apart of, but we all know how life works, you live and learn. its still one of my favorite tattoos to this day.

  41. I got my first tattoo right after graduating from college when I was 23. I was living in the Bay Area and rode the BART over to Oakland to visit Tattoo 13. Chummy tattooed my upper arm with an scene of St. Michael. Not long after it healed I was visiting home and having a drink on the back porch with my mom. I told her that I really needed to talk to her about something, and rolled up my sleeve. She starting yelling and slapped me, while I was laughing at her reaction. After about a 5 minute rant she asked to see it again, and commented that it was really pretty. My Dad just told me to keep them where they could be covered in a suit. Every time I visit LA these days I end up getting tattooed. My parents have slowly become more accepting of them. They used to say "that's the last one right?" after each tattoo, but even that has stopped. In fact my Dad just texted me about getting his first tattoo at age 60. I honestly thought he was messing with me, but he was dead serious. I guess my point is that parents attitudes can change over time. Mine go so far as to show off my tattoos to friends when I'm on vacation.
